Cosmos From Chaos

In "Cosmos From Chaos", a 213×147 cm work, Erin Bird deploys her "waterprinting" technique, where oil, Flashe vinyl paint, ink and water meet on the canvas. A vast veil of red and crimson fills almost the entire surface, pleated, crumpled, run through with darker areas that form nebulae. The edges tear into irregular fringes against a white ground. Seen up close, the material is a disorder of folds; seen from afar, a coherent form emerges, like a sky organising itself. The title speaks of this birth of order out of turmoil. This painting invites the viewer to contemplate matter in fusion, on the scale of a cosmos.
