Equinox Waterprint

In "Equinox Waterprint", a 132×94 cm work, Erin Bird deploys her "waterprinting" technique, where oil, Flashe vinyl paint, ink and water meet on the canvas. Translucent veils of ochre, amber and tobacco brown fold and crease like a cloth lifted by the wind, threaded with fine black veins and grey-violet reflections. Against a bare white ground, the form seems suspended, somewhere between a wing, a petal and a bowing figure. Like the equinox it is named after, the composition holds a balance between light and shadow, warmth and coolness, appearance and fading. The contours, dictated by the movement of water rather than the brush, keep the trace of a fleeting moment. This painting invites the viewer to slow down and contemplate a passage, the moment when one thing becomes another.
